Gouverneur is a town with a rich history and deep traditions. There are eight smaller communities located within the Town of Gouverneur. These include the Village of Gouverneur and the hamlets of Elmdale, Halls Corners, Little Bow, Natural Dam, North Gouverneur, Reservoir Hill and Staplin Corners.
The Greater Gouverneur Chamber of Commerce has been promoting economic vitality and prosperity in the Gouverneur area since 1908 and continues to be an advocate for the business community. Churches in the Town of Gouverneur have been an essential part of the fabric of the community since its founding in 1805. We are very proud of our area's schools and the opportunity for higher education in the local area. One of the most important elements in a strong and healthy community is the presence of a top performing hospital. E.J.Noble Hospital is an acute care facility which offers many specializations.
There are many ways to be involved in the Gouverneur community through its many clubs and organizations. There is a Garden Club, Veteran’s organizations, and civic groups like the Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis. Gouverneur has a Shakespeare Club. Each year, the Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fair is held at the Fairgrounds.
